A Guide to Punting in Cambridge

Never heard of punting? Well, stop right there, and let me give you all the information you need for this wonderful experience! Punting in Cambridge has to be one of my all-time favourite things to do in England. Venice vibes… but a bit colder.

Cambridge is a city in the East of England, only 50 miles north of London. The city is famously known for it’s university, gorgeous architecture, and of course punting along the River Cam. A punt is a flat-bottomed boat with a square-cut bow, made to be used in shallow waters. Just like the gondoliers in Venice, the punter guides the boat by pushing against the river bed with a long pole. The punters are formally dressed and full to the brim with facts and information, which completes the full authentic experience.

Route along the River Cam

The ride along the river is incredibly peaceful and relaxing. The perfect chance to snuggle up under a blanket (or two) and enjoy the sights of Cambridge. You’ll punt under the Bridge of Sighs and the Cam Bridge at Magdalene College. You’ll see the Mathematical Bridge and Wren Library. And of course not forgetting the world famous King's College Chapel.

Your chauffeur will answer any questions you may have regarding the university, city or history, and will point out the most famous sights along the way. Come rain or shine, punting is an experience to be enjoyed and not to be missed!

Cost & opening times

There are a handful of punting companies in Cambridge. We visited the city just after New Year’s in 2022, fully expecting that the punts wouldn’t be operating, as it was freezing - but they were open! We chose Scudamore’s, located at Mill Lane Punting Station. We later found out that they operate 364 days a year, with Christmas Day off.

The tour prices start from £45 for a 45 minute ride, the cost increases depending on off peak/peak seasons. Opening hours also increase during the summer months - starting at 9am running until 5pm in the winter and 9pm in the summer. Umbrellas and blankets are provided in those cooler months. Scudamore’s have two stations, one at Mill Lane and the other at Quayside.
