COUNTRIES

DISCOVER ASIA

The population of Asia is over 4.5 billion! Plus it’s home to a quarter of the world’s countries - 48 in total. This is why it’s one of the most visited regions in the world, especially for backpackers, foodies and culture cravers. When I think of Asia, I imagine temples, densely populated cities, white sandy beaches and beautiful untouched landscapes. There’s something for every type of traveller.

In 2017, I was fortunate enough to work on a cruise ship for 4 months, sailing from China and Taiwan to South Korea and Japan. I fell in love with Shanghai’s skyscrapers, Taiwan’s hidden gems and the Japanese paradise islands. Even though these countries are neighbours, surprisingly they are different from one another.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

The famous Asian monsoon season has its good and bad parts. The negative side is booking your honeymoon to Thailand, and then it rains for the entire two weeks. Not ideal. The upside is that hotels and flights are cheaper during this time which is great for the budget traveller.

The monsoon season changes for each country, so it’s something to check before you book your trip. You can also take the chance of getting soaked and then not see a single drop of rain!

Anyway, no worries about the weather - there’s always something to see and do in Asia.

TOP TIPS

If you’re backpacking around Asia - keep your luggage light and only pack the essentials. Wearing a money belt is a great way to keep your money, passport and documents safe. Also, insect repellent, a world plug adapter and hand sanitiser should always be in your bag.

If you’re travelling to multiple countries, make sure you have all the right visas and vaccines. Oh, and drink bottled water - you do not want a Delhi Belly!
