COUNTRIES/STATES

DISCOVER NORTH AMERICA

North America is made up of 23 countries including the United States of America, Canada, Mexico and Greenland. The Caribbean Islands make up the rest. There is so much to explore that you can find mountains, deserts and beaches all in one trip! Whether you want to clear your lungs in the National Parks, see the bright lights of New York City or party and gamble in Las Vegas, there’s something for everyone.

For most first-time backpackers, they head to South-East Asia, however, that wasn’t the case for me. In the summer of 2015, I spent 3 months working and travelling in the USA. I worked at a summer camp in Pennsylvania and visited 10 states. I made a list of all the places I wanted to see and planned an epic road trip from Phoenix to Los Angeles. Stopping at Yosemite National Park, The Grand Canyon and San Francisco to name a few.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

North America has a trip for every time of the year. You can visit New York City either at Christmas to see the Rockefeller tree, just before the summer to watch the NBA finals and during the fall see the colours of Central Park.

Canada has an incredible winter ski season and if you travel north enough, you may be able to see the Northern Lights. Try to avoid hiking in the height of the summer months as the temperatures soar into the 40s. Also, avoid booking trips over the US national holidays as prices spike.

TOP TIPS

‘Top tips’ are very fitting for the USA as you must tip at most restaurants, 15% on top of your bill is the standard. Make sure you apply for your visas in advance - ETSA for the USA and TRV for Canada.

If you’re staying in one of the major cities like NYC, Los Angeles or Miami, then using public transport is the easiest way to get around. However, if you’re road-tripping or travelling between states, then hiring a car is your best option. Anyone over 21 can rent a car in the USA, however if you’re between 21 and 24, there will be an extra fee.
