DISCOVER THE CARIBBEAN

The original paradise destination. The Caribbean is known for its white sandy beaches, palm trees, delicious food and reggae music. There are over 7000 Caribbean islands with only 26 of them being official countries. Each island has its own influence and history, so deciding which island to go to first is the difficult part.

I spent a week in Barbados with my sister back in September 2015. It really was paradise! I had just finished 3 months travelling the USA and flew straight to the island to meet her. We were on a budget, however it didn’t stop us from seeing everything that the island had to offer.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

The best time to visit The Caribbean is between December and April. These months are warm, sunny and have less humidity. It’s the perfect time to escape the European winter and enjoy some sunshine. However, the other months of the year are a lot cheaper which is perfect for the budget traveller.

Just be aware of the hurricane season which is between June and November. There is an average of 13 tropical storms each year which might not seem a lot, however, we all know the devastation they can cause. The Caribbean survives on tourism from cruise ships and luxury resorts, so visiting these countries after such destruction, can help them get back on their feet. They are resilient countries and the natural beauty remains untouched.

TOP TIPS

The crime rate in The Caribbean is pretty high with robberies being one of the main issues. Overall, the region is a safe place to be and if you stay at a luxury resort, you shouldn’t have any problems. Walking around neighbourhoods and public beaches at night is something you should avoid.

Pack that insect repellent! Especially if you’re visiting in the hotter months of the year. The bugs thrive in the humidity of this region.
